Administration sees improvement in behavior and Attendance
Public schools typically enforce school uniforms in hope that student’s attendance level, behavior and academic goals improve. The administration and teachers are normally the ones who witness these improvements first hand. Studies have shown an improvement in school attendance and behavior but a correlation to an improvement in grades hasn’t been found.
This study conducted by Elisabetta Gentile and Scott A, Imberman from the University of Houston, proves that improvement of behavior and less disciplinary action was a result of the uniforms. It was found that less referrals are written and the amount of students who receive detention decreases as well.
This school in California believes that there is an influence of how students dress, on their attitude and behavior. If students are dressed formally then they are more likely to come to school and be focused. With wearing school uniforms, students are able to see school as a workplace rather than a “battleground, playground, or fashion stage.”
Schools also think that with implementing uniforms, it will create a safer environment for their students to attend class in. A study done by the US Department of Education illuminated the fact that school uniforms have the power to reduce violence within schools.
Uniform policies decrease the activity of gangs in schools by forcing students to dress alike therefore resulting in less activity from these groups. They also are not being able to wear their gang colors or signal other gangs in hopes of causing trouble on school grounds. This allows for an increase in positive behavior and also a safer environment for other students.
Some people may still believe that behavior and attitude improvements aren’t enough and the actual goal is to improve the academics of students. But the administration, this includes principals, vice principals, secretaries, guidance counselors and teachers, notice that if uniforms can create a positive effect on behavior, then maybe it can do the same to academic achievements as time progresses.
