Budget cuts are being taken place at the same time school uniforms are being implemented which causes a problem. Grace Chen emphasizes this growing problem in her article by talking about how schools expect parents to purchase supplies such as pencils, books, paper and now also school uniforms. There is controversy in this because public schools are meant to be free yet parents are paying all of this money to send their children to school. Chen introduces the point that parents will have to make household budget cuts to be able to afford these supplies. In many cases, the poorer families struggle greatly with being able to send their students to school.

As uniform are implemented with the goal of improving students attendance, behavior and academic achievements more research is being collected as to whether or not this is true. Mike Emery elaborates on recent study conducted by Elizabetta Gentile and Scott Imberman at the University of Houston. The study shows that uniforms have had positive influences on a student’s attitude, learning, and attendance. If a student comes to school dressed formally in uniforms then their focus is geared more towards learning rather than having distractions of clothes and who is wearing what.

Gretchen Kelly describes in her article how dress codes effects are that they sexualize young girls. At a young age, girls are taught that exposing their legs or arms is wrong because it is distracting and causes lust from males. Many girls worldwide believe that rather than shaming girls for exposing their legs or arms, men should be taught how to control themselves. Kelly focuses on the action being taken to fight against this shaming of girls such as the #IAmMoreThanADistraction hashtag and also petitions and protests that are being done.

In the growing world of feminism, many women have begun to shine light on the matter of school uniforms representing gender inequality and sexism. Jessica Valenti emphasizes the importance of how the dress code that is set for students is harsher on girls than it is boys. The author evaluates the shaming and wrongfully punishing of girls for not following the enforcement strict dress codes. Girls are taught that their bodies are just sexualized objects and that if they wear leggings or a tank tap, it will “distract” boys from learning.
